The buriti is a dioecious, aquatic, very fruitful and ornamental palm that has a close relationship with water during its development. It characterizes a unique formation of the cerrado, the veredas, which are areas located in valleys, very soggy, with springs or watercourses, where you can always get passage and clean water. The buriti has a single, erect, ringed stem with a diameter of 30 to 50 cm and smooth bark.
It is large for a palm tree, reaching between 2.8 and 35 meters in height. It has special aerial roots, called pneumatophores, which are able to bring oxygen to swampy areas. Its leaves are costopalmate, dark green, shiny, large, supported by strong petioles and give the crown a beautiful rounded shape. They are also very persistent, and even when dry, they remain attached to the stem for a long time. The inflorescences appear all year round, in the interfoliar spaces and are panicle-like, long, full and pendulous, like hair, yellowish-cream in color. As it is a dioecious palm, only females will bear fruit, but we need male individuals for pollination to occur. The fruits are elongated, ellipsoid to oblong drupes, brown in color and covered in shiny scales. They have an orange, fleshy pulp and usually only one seed, which is very hard. Each buriti produces 5 to 7 bunches a year, with more than 700 fruits each. They are dispersed by water and macaws.
Despite all its landscape and ecological qualities, buriti can be used for everything. The fruit is rich in vitamins and other nutrients and can be eaten fresh or in various preparations such as juices, ice cream, popsicles, jam paste, desserts and even wine. An edible, very fragrant and medicinal oil is extracted from it, which is used in the hygiene, perfumery and cosmetics industries. The leaves are used to make roofs for houses, baskets and handicrafts and the young leaves are used to make beautiful jewelry. The trunks are also used in construction, as beams, and the petioles are used to make handicrafts and crates. The palm heart is also edible and a starchy starch is extracted from it, like Indian sago.
